“Herbal Retreat: Rejuvenate with Nature and Medicinal Herbs at the 300-Year-Old Auberge, Yatakaya”
English

Welcome to the “Herbal Retreat”
Nestled in the satoyama of Nara, “Uda Medicinal Bath Inn, Yatakiya” is a 300-year-old auberge that has been beautifully renovated. Offering a special accommodation experience limited to four groups per day, Yatakiya provides the “Herbal Retreat,” where guests can heal their minds and bodies through the power of herbs, including Yamato Toki.
Satoyama and the Historic Herbal Culture
Uda City in Nara Prefecture has been known as a place where herbal culture has thrived since the Asuka period. The Nihon Shoki (Chronicles of Japan) records that Japan’s first official herbal gathering, “Kusurigari,” took place in Udanono in 611 AD, marking the beginning of state-organized herb collection. Even in modern times, this region maintains deep ties to herbal medicine, having produced the founders of pharmaceutical companies like Rohto Pharmaceutical and Tsumura. It is also home to symbolic sites of herbal culture, such as Japan’s oldest private herb garden, “Morino Kyuyakuen,” and the “House of Medicine,” which showcases the history of herbal wholesalers.
Located in Uda City, the “Herbal Town,” Yatakiya offers a unique retreat experience utilizing Yamato Toki and other medicinal herbs, blending history and nature for a truly special stay.
The Charm of Yamato Toki
Yamato Toki (Angelica acutiloba) is a perennial herb from the celery family that has been cultivated in Nara Prefecture for centuries. Its roots are used in traditional medicine for their effectiveness in improving circulation, warming the body, and alleviating pain, making it particularly valued for women’s health. Recently approved as an edible ingredient, Yamato Toki leaves are gaining attention for their rich content of vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients. With a celery-like aroma, it is now being incorporated into various culinary and wellness applications. (Source: Yamato Toki Leaflet, Yamato Herb Association)
At Yatakiya, we offer experiences centered around Yamato Toki, harnessing its natural benefits for inner care and relaxation.
